The AFAA Board of Directors recently selected fire protection expert Tom Parrish of Telgian Corporation to serve as a Board Member. The Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA) is the national association for the fire alarm industry, dedicated to improving the quality, reliability and value of fire and life-safety systems. The AFAA Board of Directors has many sub-committees, which work with training, government organizations and code development, as well as major fire protection industry players.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Tom’s caliber join our Board of Directors,” said Tom Hammerberg, SET, CFPS, technical director of AFAA. “Tom’s in-depth knowledge and expertise about fire industry codes and standards will be a major advantage to our Board and our members. Our goal is simply to ‘Improve Fire and Life Safety’ and we work very hard to ensure that concept is not eroded in the model codes. I know Tom will help us maintain the integrity of the organization.”
Parrish has more than 25 years of experience in both fire protection and emergency response. At Telgian, he leads the company’s efforts for jurisdictional compliance, research and development, serves on the training and code development committees, and manages the internal security and life safety program for all Telgian facilities. Parrish has held positions with municipal fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services and in private industry system design and installation programs. Today he still serves as an on-call firefighter certified in firefighting, emergency medical treatment and hazardous materials response.
“I am honored to join some of the most knowledgeable fire and life safety individuals in the country on the AFAA Board,” said Parrish. “The Board serves to direct the progress of the organization, and I feel it’s important to support and enhance the membership as well as the industry as a whole. Education and training, including emerging technologies, is key to our industry and I believe the Board should lead by example.”
Parrish represents Telgian on several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) technical committees and is a regular presenter at its meetings and seminars. His extensive professional credentials include Level IV NICET Certified Fire Alarm Technician, Level III NICET Inspections and Testing and Master Electrician. He is board certified as a Physical Security Professional by ASIS and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology from the Kean University of New Jersey.
