As of September 2021, the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that over 44,000 wildfires in the United States had burned approximately 5.6 million acres of land. Telgian Holdings, Inc. Executive Chairman and 1st Vice Chair of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Russell Leavitt recently shared his fire protection expertise and practical steps that can be taken to significantly lower the losses from fire in the Expert Insurance Reviews article, “10 States with the Highest Wildfire Risk, 2021 Findings.”
Practical steps outlined include an explanation of the Home Ignition Zone – immediate, intermediate, and extended protection zones. The Home Ignition Zone was devised by a retired U.S. Forest Service fire expert near the end of the 20th century and is still considered the an effective barometer in fire protection.
“Simple, but effective preventative actions to combat wildfire risk include removing all dead vegetation, including trees, removing combustible debris and garbage, removing young trees from between mature trees, and watching the spacing between mature trees,” says Leavitt.
