Telgian is a longtime supporter of the healing work conducted by the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors – the leading national nonprofit for the burn survivor community. The Phoenix Society provides essential services, from online resources to peer support, as well as Phoenix SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery).
In addition to these initiatives, perhaps the most important and far-reaching program produced by the Phoenix Society is the World Burn Congress (WBC). The WBC began in 1985, and was developed by burn survivors, for burn survivors, to identify and understand the issues that impact the daily lives of those associated with burn trauma. Today, WBC is the world’s largest gathering of burn survivors and serves to connect attendees to crucial services and resources.
Representatives from Telgian attended the 2023 biennial event, held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. At WBC, Telgian represented part of the larger burn community which includes loved ones, hospital partners, first responders, fire safety professionals and more. The event included speakers and workshops, plus special events such as the Walk of Solidarity, Open Mic Night and the 2023 Keynote Address by former NHL hockey player and burn survivor Aaron Volpatti.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States, 1.1 million burn injuries requiring medical attention occur each year. Around the globe, that number skyrockets to 11 million who face a burn injury annually. WBC offers many burn survivors their first chance to connect with others on the journey of recovery and Telgian is proud to be a part of this important effort.

Founded by Alan Breslau in 1977, the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people affected by a burn injury. Breslau, himself a burn survivor of a 1963 airplane crash, visited a young boy in a burn center shortly after his accident. There, he recognized the power of peer support and the idea for the Phoenix Society was born.
