Since early 2020, the impact of COVID-19 has been felt in Arizona communities both large and small. Although the virus has disrupted the lives of nearly everyone in some way, food-insecure individuals – who number over 2 million in the state – face particular challenges. And, because of the pandemic, the number of Arizonans who experience food insecurity is only expected to grow.
Nearly 30% of Arizona residents are currently considered “working poor.” This means that they are living on wages that barely cover housing and basic necessities. And, with little money to spare, some simply go without meals or purchase the cheapest groceries available in order to feed themselves and their families.
Even before COVID-19, the situation was troubling. Without consistent access to healthy food, children are more likely to struggle with educational setbacks. And, entire families are in danger of other health-related issues, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, as well as obesity.
Today, the situation is even more dire, since food insecurity and poor nutrition are associated with the chronic illnesses that put people at higher risk for the more severe complications of COVID-19.
This year, more than ever, we at Telgian, knew that we needed to help. So, the 2020 Telgian Holiday Food Drive, in partnership with the St. Mary’s Food Bank, was held to help those in need during the holiday season.
