PRSM Best Practices Handbook

Telgian fire, life safety and security experts Tom Parrish and Steve Goyette were pleased to contribute expertise in the form of  three “best practice” papers for the recently published 2017 PRSM Best Practices Handbook. The Handbook informs the retail industry on how to strategically improve the bottom line at retail stores, by driving efficiencies through effective retail facilities maintenance. This Handbook was provided to all attendees at the recent PRSM National Conference.

The challenge: NFPA 101 (2015) 7-9.3 – Periodic Testing of Emergency Lighting Equipment contains a multitude of requirements related to both building features and specific occupancies, the focus of which are to minimize danger to life from the effects of fire – including the products of fire, such as smoke, heat and gas – as well as non-fire related emergencies. Among the building feature requirements outlined in the code are egress requirements, contained in Chapter 7 which includes the specifics regarding emergency lighting equipment necessary along the means of egress within a building.

Telgian’s papers focused on application of NFPA 25 requirements for water-based fire protection systems and NFPA 101 requirements for emergency/exit light testing and inspections, as well as addressed the transfer of life safety system monitoring from traditional telephone service (POTS) to new technology.
