Security and Safety in the Public Realm presentation at ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) features Telgian’s William Sako Telgian Engineering & Consulting Vice President, Security Risk Consulting, William Sako, along with Philip Chen, Principal and President of Ann Beha Architects, and Abdallah Tabet, Landscape Architect Associate at OLIN, will speak at ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. Sako, Chen, and Tabet will jointly present a workshop entitled Security and Safety in the Public Realm from 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM at the event, which will be held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

With a career that spans more than more than 45 years, William Sako is uniquely qualified to conduct the Security and Safety in the Public Realm workshop. As Vice President, Security Risk Consulting for Telgian, Sako oversees the planning and design of security projects for clients across a broad spectrum of industries. His expertise includes the design of physical security measures, technical security systems, operations security programs, and anti-terrorism programs, as well as the creation of protective design standards for super towers and comprehensive force protection programs for high-value and government facilities.

The Security and Safety in the Public Realm workshop will explain how public buildings and open space have framed and shaped civic life since ancient times. In times of social peace, these places have been sanctuaries for community and public life. Today, when acts of violence are carried out in peacetime, and on civilians around the world, public spaces and buildings in cities have increasingly become targets.

“The design of these spaces cannot respond to every action with an equal and opposite reaction, lest our public buildings become fortresses and publicly accessible open spaces disappear,” says Sako. Security and Safety in the Public Realm will explore, however, how we can best promote openness, access, and transparency in our public spaces and buildings, while still keeping the inhabitants safe.

Security and Safety in the Public Realm presentation at ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) features Telgian’s William SakoThis workshop will also examine how security is integrated into building and site design in specific case studies including two US Embassies abroad and a museum on the National Mall in Washington DC.

Learning objectives include:

  • Examine goals for security planning
  • Understand nature of threats in public spaces and how threat assessments are prepared
  • Define Planning and design principles for countering threats in closed campuses versus open buildings
  • Discuss methods for integrating security into building and site design

In addition to Security and Safety in the Public Realm, ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) will showcase dozens of speakers in 100+ accredited workshops on a wide variety of topics. In addition, the event will host an EXPO with cutting-edge products, services, ideas, and innovations.
