“A performance-based approach in facility design is where the required level of protection is achieved through some means other than the means prescribed by the code,” explains Musser. “While the idea of applying a performance-based protection option is not a new concept and the approach has been widely embraced by jurisdictions and building authorities across the world, applying performance-based options to egress and evacuation requirements is often overlooked.”
A well-recognized industry expert, Musser has more than 15 years of experience in fire protection engineering and consulting, including code consulting and design. She has designed fire and life safety systems for large commercial and industrial facilities and has managed projects across a wide range of market segments, not only throughout the nation, but internationally, as well.
According to Musser, there are many reasons why compliance with the prescriptive egress and evacuation requirements may be undesirable. Her article delves into model building and fire codes, the performance based egress approach, and quantifying egress and evacuation performance.
