One of the key components of fire safety in high-rise buildings is the reliability of their fire protection systems and features. Telgian Engineering & Consulting, LLC’s Regional Practice Leader James Antell recently explored the topic of reliability of fire protection systems in high-rise buildings, why it is important and how it can be achieved in the article “Reliability of Fire Protection Features in High Rise Buildings” for International Fire Protection magazine.
Antell has over 35 years of fire engineering experience, acting as an advisor to design teams and building owners regarding compliance with local and international fire safety codes and standards. His specific areas of concentration include high-rise buildings, public assembly facilities and healthcare. As a recognized expert in high-rise fire safety design, his global high-rise fire engineering experience includes many of the world’s tallest structures including projects in the U.S., Asia and the Middle East. In addition, he has lectured worldwide on high-rise fire safety and published numerous articles on the subject.
“It is important to understand that to provide a safe building environment active and passive features must function reliably in adverse conditions. This involves three aspects: Design, Installation and Operation / Maintenance,” explains Antell.
In addition, the article focuses on the design aspect of reliability, as well as provides a review of building code provisions related to reliability and some best practices and solutions to address reliability.
“The key is to look at fire safety of tall buildings holistically recognizing that one size does not fit all and that code minimums may not achieve the desired level of reliability that the building will perform as intended in a broad range of emergencies,” says Antell.
