Telgian Engineering & Consulting Executive Vice President Daniel Vandergriff recently shared his fire protection knowledge and expertise in the article, “Sounding the Alarm for Proper Fire System Commissioning” in ENR magazine. In the piece, Vandergriff explores how, in the engineering community, one small miscalculation or overlooked detail could prove to be disastrous.
According to Vandergriff, “That’s particularly true of fire and life safety systems, which sit dormant and unnoticed, but must perform flawlessly once triggered by a fire event. The sheer number of fire protection systems, and the need for them to work in concert, is why building owners should care about commissioning and integrated testing—practices that ensure that technical experts are involved in all phases.”
Vandergriff has a diverse background in both government and private sector code enforcement, as well as engineering management experience spanning over 25 years. He is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), Fire Officer III, ICC- Fire Plans Examiner, IFSAC/ICC- Fire Inspector III and is NICET II Certified for Fire Sprinkler Layout and Design.
As an industry-recognized professional, he frequently lectures around the country on a variety of fire safety topics such as Prioritizing Fire Protection Upgrades with Limited Budgets. And, in addition to the “Sounding the Alarm For Proper Fire System Commissioning” article, Vandergriff is a regular contributor to fire protection industry periodicals.
He also plays a vital role in industry codes and standards development by serving as a member on NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 22, Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection and NFPA 1037, Standard on Fire Marshal Professional Qualifications.
