The most recent issue of Sprinkler Age magazine included the article “NFPA 25 and 72 Inspection, Testing and Maintenance,” authored by Russ Leavitt, Executive Chairman of Telgian Corporation. In the piece, Leavitt explains how the inspection, testing, and maintenance of NFPA 25 and NFPA 72 are the same, yet different.
According to Leavitt, “On the surface, it seems logical that the purpose and methodology for the ITM of water-based suppression and fire alarm systems would be closely aligned. However, the differences between the two documents are significant and important to understand when making the decision to add fire alarm systems to a fire sprinkler contractor’s list of services. Failure to understand the differences can lead to unintended negative consequences.”
Leavitt is an industry expert in the fire, life safety and security space and offers over 39 years of industry experience. As the Executive Chairman of Telgian, he leads the worldwide provider of comprehensive fire, security, life safety consulting, testing and inspections, and engineering/design services.
He holds a Level IV certification from NICET in Fire Sprinkler Layout and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) designation. In addition, he is a Board Member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is the Chair of the NFPA 13 Sprinkler System Discharge Criteria Technical Committee. Leavitt also serves on the NFPA 13 Installation Committee, as well as NFPA 3, NFPA 4 and NFPA 25 Technical Committees.
In addition to the NFPA 25 and 72 Inspection, Testing and Maintenance article, Leavitt has also authored industry training materials and numerous articles including Fire Safety Codes and Standards: What You Need to Know, Understanding Fire Protection Classifications, and the International Fire Sprinkler Opportunity, among others.
