Hospital Security Strategies: Moving the Needle on Violence Prevention In the article, “The Daily Hazard Proving Untenable in Hospitals and Strategies to Curb It” for Becker’s Hospital Review, author Erica Carbajal explores how the recent fatal shooting of a staff member at Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was a vivid reminder that COVID-19 is not the healthcare industry’s only challenge. Security industry leaders, such as Telgian Engineering & Consulting LLC (TEC) Senior Security Project Manager Lauris Freidenfelds, weighed in with their expertise on why violence persists and how to move the needle on violence prevention.

“In the healthcare world, we are doing training all the time,” Freidenfelds says. “We’re starting to see that you could prevent some of these things if you were just a bit different in the way that you approach a particular individual. And secondly, if you felt there was a problem, not going alone, perhaps, in a room and having those kind of tactics can help prevent some of this kind of situation.”

Freidenfelds has 40-plus years of security industry experience and an extensive knowledge of operational security, technology, and emergency management programs.  At TEC, he is responsible for the management of complex projects focusing on security and emergency management. He is also a former Director of Security and Emergency Preparedness for a major metropolitan healthcare system.
