Fire Sprinkler Requirements for Warehousing Utilizing ASRS Telgian Engineering & Consulting, LLC (TEC) Chief Engineering Officer Tracey Bellamy PE, CFPS, CWBSP recently explored the rapid development of automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and how they have outpaced the coverage provided within the current Building and Fire Codes and associated referenced Standards in the article “The warehouse of the future… today” for Building Safety Journal magazine. Building Safety Journal is the official publication of the International Code Council (ICC).

Bellamy is Chief Engineering Officer at fire protection, life safety and security industry leader Telgian Engineering & Consulting, LLC (TEC). He has more than 30 years of experience in fire protection engineering and extensive experience with fire suppression system design, fire hazard analysis and fire protection system inspection and testing. He is licensed as a Professional Engineer in 49 U.S. states and is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) as well as a Certified Water Based System Professional (CWBSP). In addition, he serves on several NFPA technical and correlating committees including NFPA 1, 11, 13, 15, 25, 30, 30B, 101 and 5000.

“Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) are being used to increase efficiency across a wide range of warehouse operations by utilizing cutting-edge robotics,” explains Bellamy. “However technically advanced they may be, ASRS systems are certainly not without significant potential fire safety risks.”

Many of these systems are simply outside the scope of the established protection metrics, which are based on conventional storage methods.  “The warehouse of the future… today” explores appropriate fire protection, including installation criteria, for a variety of ASRS arrangements, and highlight opportunities for more economical solutions.
