FPC/Fire Protection Contractor magazine recently featured the article Fire Sprinkler Design: Then, Now and the Future authored by Telgian’s Russell Leavitt. Leavitt, a Licensed Professional Engineer, is the executive Chairman of fire protection, life safety and security industry leader Telgian and is uniquely qualified to discuss fire sprinkler design advancements.
According to Leavitt, “The use of design technology is here to stay. If used properly, the benefits can result in faster and more efficient design. However, computer-based design does not currently and, in my opinion, will never be a substitute for a well-trained, knowledgeable designer or layout technician. A fire sprinkler designer who cannot manually calculate a system, lay out sprinklers, or route piping without a computer will never deliver as fine a product, no matter how sophisticated the design software, as the designer who knows and has the ability to apply design principles.”
Leavitt is an industry leader in the fire, life safety and security space and offers more than 39 years of industry experience. He holds a Level IV certification from NICET in Fire Sprinkler Layout and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) designation. In addition, he is a Board Member and is the Chair of the NFPA 13 Sprinkler System Discharge Criteria Technical Committee. Leavitt also serves on the NFPA 13 Installation Committee, as well as NFPA 3, NFPA 4 and NFPA 25 Technical Committees.
Leavitt has authored industry training materials and numerous articles including Fire Safety Codes and Standards: What You Need to Know, Understanding Fire Protection Classifications, and the International Fire Sprinkler Opportunity, among others.
