Fire Safety in a Pandemic World

Fire safety During COVID-19Navigating fire safety in a pandemic world? From fire safety systems inspections, testing, maintenance and repair, to reopening buildings, plus changes in use, there are a myriad of issues that facilities managers must address. With careful thought and some planning, businesses can operate while mitigating these risks. Telgian Fire Safety expert Ralph Bless recently explored just how businesses can operate while addressing risks in the article “Responsible Priorities” in IFMA‘s FMJ magazine.

Bless is the Vice President of Account Management at Telgian and is a licensed professional engineer with more than 39 years of experience in fire protection services. He serves on multiple National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) technical committees and currently chairs the NFPA 232 technical committee.

“The last year has been a trial that most of us have never experienced,” says Bless.  “With COVID-19, we have struggled together as an entire world population.  There have been conflicting views on how to address and accommodate which provides for confusion of the public, as well as business owners and operators.  Since COVID-19 has not been a linear process, but rather a reoccurring set of events, we are challenged to learn and adapt as we try to meet the needs of our businesses, employees, and communities.”

For business owners and operators, part of this process requires considering a responsibility to fire safety.  This is especially critical in this pandemic as healthcare workers, fire fighters and other emergency responders are already stressed and it is incumbent upon us to do what we can to limit the issues that might require attention of these protectors of our societies.

“We must all realize and work together to keep our communities safe and productive.  Businesses are vital to the character and vitality of our communities, they are essential to who we are, and so they have a significant responsibility to the community to remain viable and safe during these times,” says Bless.
