Today’s fire protection design world is filled tight deadlines; Architects’, owners’ and general contractors’ schedule demands, as well as last-minute bidding practices have changed the pace and the course of the fire protection systems design process. But faster is not always better. Something always suffers in the end. In the May 2015 issue of PM Engineer, Operations Manager at Telgian Corporation Will Smith explores this situation in the article entitled Where Have Our Standards Gone?
This piece reviews the many ways in which fixing potential problems on the drawing board is the most important part of the fire sprinkler design process. Smith says, “…costs and delays in the field can quickly cripple a budget and profits. There is no place for “Just get something on paper and get it out the door!” The reality is what you do not fix now in your fire protection systems design, you must fix later or problems will plague the project.”
