Fire protection engineer and industry expert Tracey Bellamy will present four Fire Smarts workshops at the Kennewick Fire Training Center in Kennewick, Washington on March 10-11, 2020. The continuing education seminars: Introduction to Fire Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 25 Overview, NFPA 25 Step-by-Step Testing Procedures and Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances (Underground) comply with International Code Council (ICC) CEU requirements for ICC approved training courses. Completion of these workshops will not only enhance technical knowledge and job skills, but will also earn CPD points required for NICET certification.
As a veteran instructor and speaker, Bellamy offers more than 25 years experience in the fire protection industry as a Fire Protection Engineer, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, and Certified Water-Based System Professional. His extensive background includes not only fire suppression system design, but also fire hazard analysis, fire protection system inspection, and fire safety systems testing. In addition, he is a licensed Professional Engineer (49 US states, DC and Guam).
A leader in the industry, Bellamy serves on several National Fire Protection (NFPA) technical and correlating committees. These include NFPA 11, 13, 15, 16, 25, 30, 30B, 101 and 5000 (building code). In addition to his NFPA membership, he is also a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE).
Introduction to Fire Sprinkler Systems
Bellamy’s first presentation, Introduction to Fire Sprinkler Systems, will be held on March 10, 2020 (8:00 am-12:00 pm Pacific Time). In addition to a high-level overview of fire sprinkler systems, the history and objectives of fire sprinkler systems will be reviewed. The three required components needed for a sprinkler to function – automatic sprinkler, water supply, and the connection (piping) between the two – will be examined.
Bellamy will also cover the four major types of sprinkler systems – pre-action, dry pipe, wet pipe and deluge – as well as the associated components. Basic installation requirements will be examined, along with system acceptance.
NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems Overview
This 4hr NFPA 25 Overview course will be held on March 10, 2020 (1:00 pm-5:00 pm Pacific Time). This presentation examines the scope and purpose of NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, which is one of the misunderstood and frequently misapplied standards in use today.
Bellamy will review owner, AHJ, and contractor responsibilities for issues as diverse as accessibility, fire sprinkler freeze protection, reporting, and safety. In addition, he will discuss the issue of contractor and owner liability.
Finally, the layout of the Standard will be reviewed, as well as the scope of inspections, tests, and maintenance for fire protection systems such as fire sprinklers, standpipes, and fire pumps.
NFPA 25 – Step-by-Step Testing Procedures
Bellamy’s NFPA 25 Step by Step Testing Procedures course will be conducted on March 11, 2020 (8:00 am-12:00 pm Pacific Time). This course details step-by-step instructions on performing the most common tests required by NFPA 25. These include main drains, valve operation, dry valve full and partial trips, pressure reducing valves, among others. These procedures are a helpful guide for contractors and service providers to use when training inspectors and creating quality control procedures to ensure that the required tests are completed as mandated by the Standard.
Attendees will learn to identify and apply testing procedures that will help ensure that systems function properly and assist in limiting the potential liability that comes with having standard testing procedures.
Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances
Bellamy’s final presentation, Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances (Underground), will be held on March 11, 2020 (1:00 pm-5:00 pm Pacific Time). This course examines the 2013 edition of NFPA 24 Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances. This Standard contains the latest requirements and information regarding the installation of underground water supply piping for fire protection systems.
Throughout the presentation, Bellamy will review the requirements for the components used in these systems, along with the installation requirements.
