Building Safety Month, Week 2: Ensuring a Safer Future Through Training and EducationThis month, the International Code Council (ICC) marks the 40th annual celebration of Building Safety Month. Each year, the ICC partners with building professionals, government agencies and companies such as Telgian, to shine a light on the role that building codes play in our lives.

Each week during May, a key topic area is highlighted, with the goal to raise awareness about building safety, as well as to promote the need for the adoption of modern, regularly updated building codes. Week 2 (May 6-12) focuses on ensuring a safer future through training and education.

According to the ICC, “Building safety professionals ensure that all buildings, including homes, businesses, and places of public assembly, are built to required building safety codes, which address structural stability, fire safety, exits, sanitation, electricity, energy efficiency, and more.” Since building safety professionals are directly responsible for protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public, the importance of ongoing training and professional development cannot be overstated. The appropriate training of building safety professionals is essential in order to create, and maintain, a successful built environment. In addition, continued education is crucial because it helps code officials avoid mistakes and accidents, while properly enforcing codes.

To that end, Telgian is helping chart a new course for continued education in the industry, led by an executive team that represents some of the most experienced fire and life safety, and security professionals in the world. Members of the Telgian team serve on major National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Committees, as well as on select International Code Council (ICC), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Section Committees.

Telgian leaders are regularly requested as presenters by influential industry organizations such as American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA), Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and more. These Telgian associates are not only internationally recognized for their industry expertise, they also demonstrate a passion for educating the next generation of building industry professionals.

In addition, Telgian partners with FireSmarts, to teach an ongoing, monthly series of continuing education webinars. These webinars focusing a wide variety of industry topics for building safety professionals. Examples include Energy Storage Systems – Fire Hazard Considerations, Fire Alarm Systems and the Codes that Require Them, Fire Doors and Egress Doors Inspection and Maintenance, and How Fire Loss Impacts Code Development and Enforcement.

FireSmarts webinar participants receive a Certificate of Completion which complies with International Code Council (ICC) CEU requirements for ICC approved training courses or can be used as supporting documentation for CPD points required for NICET certification. Certificates can also be used as supporting documentation for credit hours required for re-certification as part of the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code (UCC) program or for Texas Commission on Fire Protection certifications.
