Historic Fires & the Code Changes that Resulted
2018 Fire Marshals and Inspectors Seminar
October 16 – 19, 2018

Telgian Corporation’s Vice President Tom Parrish is slated to speak at the 2018 Fire Marshals and Inspectors Seminar on Wednesday, October 17. Hosted by New York State’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Fire Marshals and Inspectors Seminar will be held at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. Conducted annually, this event keeps fire inspectors aware of important technological and code changes and provides background information in the field of fire prevention.

Parrish’s workshop, entitled “Historic Fires & the Code Changes that Resulted,” focuses on building codes and city safety regulations that exist today as a direct result of tragic events. Preventable disasters and the changes they produced discussed include:

  • The Great Chicago Fire, which claimed almost 300 lives in 1871. Out of this tragedy came the requirements for flame-resistant materials and the concept of fire separations between buildings,
  • The Triangle Shirtwaist Company’s Manhattan factory fire of 1911, whose locked doors, narrow aisles and unsafe storage practices prevented 147 workers from escaping, and
  • The Cocoanut Grove Nightclub Fire of 1942, which claimed hundreds of lives due to an insufficient number of exits for the overcrowded space, resulting in maximum capacity laws.

The event, which runs from October 16-19, includes speakers from commerce, industry, and government agencies. Attending the courses provided in this program will meet the 24 hour in-service credit requirement.
