“Fire Sprinklers and the International Market- Demand Growing in 2010” by Russ Leavitt
Mr. Leavitt has conducted seminars for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Germany, and Qatar. In addition, other NFPA instructors have taught in the United Kingdom, Europe, South Korea, Hong Kong, The United Arab Emirates, and other countries around the globe. Most of the seminars are five days in length and cover NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems; NFPA 20, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection; and NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.

The NFPA 25, Standard for Inspection Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, Report of Comments (ROC) for the 2011 edition has been issued and there are significant changes in the attempt to clarify the roles of the owner and the inspection provider. The revision process undertaken by the technical committee for this important standard is different than others. This article addresses how the interests that are represented by the individual technical committee members are clear cut and at times diametrically opposed. This dynamic is not as prevalent with most of the installation technical committees.
